Port Richmond homes and their sewer lines
Port Richmond grew as a working neighborhood beside the Delaware River docks, rail yards and factories. The City’s Rowhouse Manual mentions its rowhouses for workers living near factories. Most homes are attached brick rows with basements and front laterals to the street sewer, in the city’s older combined-sewer area.
Long ownership is common, and with it come drain lines that have been rodded many times but never replaced.
Common sewer problems we hear about in Port Richmond
- Recurring root or grease blockages that need rodding every year or two
- Old cast iron house drains scaled or corroded inside, plus clay laterals with cracked joints
- Heavy-rain backups from the combined sewer into basement floor drains
- Missing or buried cleanouts, which make every service call harder
What to know before you fix it
If you get a backup every time it storms, look into PWD’s Basement Backup Protection Program. It may install a backwater valve or modify downspouts at no cost, but your lateral must be in good condition first. If PWD finds a defect, the HELP loan can cover the lateral repair, and the backflow device can be installed during that work. A cleanout installation ($575–$1,725 per PlumbingPriceGuide) can make future maintenance much cheaper.
The rules are the same citywide
In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the owner is responsible for the house drain, curb trap, lateral and the connection to the sewer. A licensed plumber must do the work, and PWD can issue a Notice of Defect with a deadline to fix it. Eligible owners can spread the cost over 60 months at zero interest with the HELP loan.
